Caring for your Septic Tank...

Unlike most of our home appliances, with proper care and maintenance your septic system can last indefinitely. Sure, you've heard of people who never do anything to their septic system and it continues to work without any special attention--until you have a party and when your least expect it it rebels!

All of your household drains empty into the septic tank: washing machine, showers, garbage disposal, toilets, etc. Most homes in Northeastern Ohio have two 1,000 gallon tanks. Bacteria breaks down the paper while the rest of the solids form a sludge at the bottom of the tank. This sludge needs to be pumped every two years.

It is best to avoid using additives in your tank which can harm the beneficial bacteria that helps maintain the tank's environment. Only biodegradable materials should be flushed down the toilet. Do not use drains to dispose of oils, grease or cooking oils.

Do Not Flush These Down the Toilet....

  • grease
  • chemicals
  • cigarette butts
  • disposable diapers,
  • feminine products
  • condoms
  • coffee grounds

    Do.....
  • conserve water by using a low-flush toilet (which reduces each flush from 5-6 gallons down to 3.5)
  • repair leaky faucets and toilets immediately (leaky systems can add up gallons quickly)
use liquid laundry detergent: they contain fewer fillers
cut down on your use of laundry detergent--often we use too much product

How to Tell if your Septic Tank
is in Trouble...

  • Slowed flushing
  • Soft spot over the septic field
  • Septic odors in the bathroom
  • Sewage in the tub or shower
  • Bubbling sounds coming from the toilet or tub

Don't...

Park your car or equipment over your septic field, and don't build over it.
